Natural Head Lice Cure
A natural head lice cure is one of many ways to treat head lice and head louse. There really are just a handful of common head
lice cures, including using natural head lice cures, over the counter medications and prescription drugs.
For various reasons, many people are considering using natural head lice cures to treat head lice and head louse; one of the most
common reasons is safety. Head lice or head louse (plural) is actually one of the most common conditions which is treated using natural
remedies. It’s quite common to see natural head lice cures consisting of mayonnaise, olive oil, tea tree oil, along with vinegar, Listerine
and other mouthwashes. Some people believe that the more acidic the content is in the natural head lice cure the better whilst other head
lice cures will suggest using ingredients to smother the head lice thus preventing it from breathing.
It is specifically worthwhile pointing out that there has been some alarming research published and discussed which makes many
people more willing to consider using natural head lice cures. When treating head lice.
In early 2006, INSERM, a French National Institute for Medical Research, listed many potential dangers of using chemicals found
in many head lice cures. Specifics of the report were published and highlighted in many newspapers and medical journals across the world
including, in the UK, The Daily Mail. The report concluded that many of the side effects and dangers from using traditional head lice cures
were apparent in children. It was noted that many contained chemicals and insecticides which doubled the risk of developing leukaemia as
well as noting that many head lice cures aren’t going to be suitable for everyone especially those with asthma, chest conditions, eczema,
allergies, etc, This is in addition to those who are pregnant and breast feeding, as the chemicals used can cause further irritations and
complications.
A significant health hazard with insecticides is that the scalp is considered to be one of the most absorbent areas of the body. Therefore, in
the case of non-natural head lice cures, insecticides can enter the human body quickly, especially if the infected person has now got sores on
the scalp due to excessive scratching. Reported side effects of chemical based head lice cures, according to the UK based Pesticide Exposure
Group, include lethargy, dizziness, headaches, even hallucinations.
A common ingredient for many non-natural head lice cures is Malathion, which, in the US, has received strong support for it to be banned.
Malathion is an insecticide which can interfere with the human immune system, as reported in The Journal of Pesticide Reform in 1992. As well as
interfering with the immune system, heart disease in fish has been found in areas where Malathion has been sprayed.
In the UK, since 1995, head lice cures treatments which contain Carbaryl have been prescription only, following tests and evidence showing that
Carbaryl caused cancers and birth defects when tested on animals. In addition, INSERM concluded that children exposed to Carbaryl doubled the
risk of being diagnosed with Leukaemia.
Many over the counter head lice cures contain Permetherin or Phenorthrin. These are
considered as natural ingredients, however they do contain chemical compounds which can be dangerous. For example, Permetherin has been
identified as being potentially carcinogenic and both Permethrin and Phenorthrin have been linked to leukaemia and various cancers
Until 1949, DDT (DichloroDiphenylTrichloroethane) had been used as a suitable head lice cure, however it became apparent that head lice were
immune to DDT. Following DDF’s global banning, Lindane was recommended as an alternative head lice cure. Now banned in many countries including
in the UK but not the US, Lindane has also shown numerous risks.
Finally, for many, it is not just the possible side effects of using head lice cures which contain pesticides which worry them; it is also due to
their toxicity and harming potential if the treatments are not administered correctly. In the US, the Harvard School of Public Health has advised
of the “greatest harm….from the well intentioned but misguided use of…toxic substances to eliminate head lice”. In the UK, PHMEG (Public Health
Medicine Environmental Group) advises of the requirement of careful assessments when using chemical treatments. It is important to note, as do
many of the manufacturers of chemical non-natural head lice cures, that a lot of the studies into the actual chemical part of the head lice cure
had above normal concentrations of doses and serious side effects are rare. However, it is imperative that people who choose to use chemical
based head lice cures are made aware of the potential dangers, which is why many people now opt to consider using natural head lice
cures.
